Simple ART of Saving

Build Financial Confidence

Brigitt Thompson

Author of Trust Yourself with Money: Build Financial Confidence through the Simple Art of Saving

How did you get your idea or concept for your business?

Financial struggle is a reality for many of us. The reasons we experience it are both internal and external. It’s a complex conversation to have with ourselves and each other. I’m interested in morphing financial shame into power and optimism.

I wrote my first book, “Trust Yourself with Money,” to share the story of how I tackled the process of looking at my finances, seeing a colossal mess, and sorting through the rubble to create something new. My goal is to develop tools and resources to help others who are on a similar journey.

What Was Your Biggest ‘A-ha’ Moment?

My biggest ‘a-ha’ moment is one that I return to frequently. I talk about it in my book. It’s the idea of self-efficacy: even if I don’t know exactly what to do to solve a problem I’m facing in the moment, it’s enough to anchor into the belief that I have the capacity to figure it out. I don’t need to have all the answers—but I do need to believe that an answer exists, and that I have the ability to find it.

Instead of scattering my focus into a messed-up imaginary future where everything is falling apart, I bring my attention back to the present and remind myself that I have the intelligence and common sense to figure out how to get to where I want to be. I can learn new things. I can come to new conclusions. I can navigate my way through life—and I don’t have to have all of the answers at the outset. Is it a perfect, linear process? Absolutely not. Still, I keep returning to this idea, and it helps me find my way forward.

Looking back, what’s one thing you would do differently?

Wow. When I look back and think about what I would have done differently, it’s a long list. On the other hand, I wonder if I would have landed here without my exact life experiences, and I like my life right now. I guess the one thing I would have done differently is something I’m still working on: not beating myself up while learning new things. I would push back on the shame of “You should have known better. You should have done x or y.” That’s a tough one. The idea that we should be perfect can be a stumbling block for high-achieving people. I still don’t like the idea of failing, but there’s no other way to evolve and learn.

Can you recall a moment in which you faced a roadblock in your progress but decided to push past it?

Roadblocks come up all the time. I feel like this is the norm. In late 2015, I decided that I wanted to be 100% debt-free. At the time, achieving this goal seemed highly unlikely—not impossible, but it just seemed like it would take forever, and I’m not always the most patient person. At the same time, I wanted to achieve this goal more than anything. I was completely obsessed with it. The roadblocks and frustrations were constant—too numerous to recount here—but I kept going. Pushing past roadblocks is not always a triumphant, arms-in-the-air, “Rocky” kind of experience. Sometimes it looks like crying, whining, complaining, etc. The key is to keep going.

Is there anything you would like to share that we haven’t asked?

Life delivers lessons every day. Some days are better than others. Some days, we’re tired and overwhelmed. On other days, we feel like we can take on the world. If you’re frustrated and exhausted by your circumstances, don’t worry about trying to be super positive overnight. Just start with a very quiet sense of curiosity: given that there is an answer, what might it be? Gently begin to ask yourself questions. Stay curious—about your beliefs, your behavior, and the life you’re living right now.

Makeup Artistry

LaVonne Tynesha

About my company:

MakeupLove By LaVonne is a makeup artistry business based in Wilmington, Delaware, founded by freelance makeup artist LaVonne Tynesha. Boasting over 15 years of experience as an artist, LaVonne is passionate about all things beauty and continuously strives to learn and develop her skills. Working with her clients individually, LaVonne guides them through the beauty process and crafts every look to suit their skin tone, texture, and tastes. LaVonn’es mission is to provide clients with not only a great makeup application, but also an excellent experience.

In the beginning, what motivated you to become an entrepreneur?

Doing makeup for me started as a hobby. What motivated me to become an entrepreneur or at least start to take my business more seriously, was a few different reasons. In 2011, I was laid off from my corporate job, so I really needed to find something that could supplement my income. I have always believed in having multiple sources of income and turning your passion into a paycheck. I really enjoyed doing makeup and meeting new people and I felt makeup could be a good side hustle.

Can you recall a moment in which you faced a roadblock in your progress but decided to push past it?

Yes, there was a time that I felt very stagnant and my business wasn’t growing. Since I work a full-time job, I didn’t put a lot of focus into my business. I felt overwhelmed and unsure if I wanted to give 100% to one job over the other. Sharing my work and the fear of being judged by others stopped me from showcasing my work. I decided I was going to do both and put more time into my business by advertising and being more present on social media. My business started growing and my work started to improve as well.

For other women thinking about starting a business in the make up industry, what is your biggest lesson or take away you can share with them to keep them encouraged when their motivation is at its lowest?

I would share with them that there is room in this industry for all of us. Everyone has their own style of makeup and someone will like your style over another artists style. Be confident in yourself and never stop learning and growing.

Is there anything you would like to share that we haven’t asked?

Next year, my company will be celebrating 10 years. Over the past 10 years, makeup has changed so much and it will continue to change. My advice to myself and to others is to stay current with makeup trends. Even though you may not incorporate them into your daily routine, it’s good to know how to do them.

We all have dreams. We all aspire to do more, but what happens when you finally stir up enough courage to step out on faith and start turning your dreams into reality and the obstacles hit? It can be downright discouraging and , in more cases than not , cause you just to throw up your hands and quit. NOT SO FAST BEAUTIFUL – I am here to tell you the fight is so worth it!

Over 10 years ago I transitioned from a life in corporate America to a full – time life of entrepreneurship. Was it difficult? ABSOLUTELY! Do I have regrets? HELL NO! It was the best decision I ever made. I BET ON MYSELF.  Over the past 10+ years, I have encountered so many naysayers that told me my ideals would never work, “find something else,” “now is not the time,” and the list goes on and on. I also encountered people that were willing to help me and sold me a bag of rotten goods. All of these exchanges had me discouraged and at times doubting what I knew GOD had placed inside of me as my first steps in walking in my purpose, BUT, I continued to BET ON MYSELF and have faith in what I knew was my path. As I built my confidence and continued working on my business the right people came into my life and restored my faith that I was on the right track and to continue pushing forward giving me guidance, mentorship and introducing me to valuable resources. There were even times when these amazing people had more faith in me than I had in myself and this encouraged me to keep pushing and not give up.

As entrepreneurs, we are pulled in so many different directions and at times, that can be overwhelming and we just want help and guidance on how to get to the next stage and not drown in the day – to – day hustle. This is where things get real, REAL fast, and we can lose sight of our WHY. What happens if there is no one else, what do you do ? This is usually the time many people feel entrepreneurship is just not for them and they start looking for reasons why they should fold. In actuality, this is the time you go back to your WHY and push through. This ideal was planted in you for a reason, if it was easy, EVERYONE would be an entrepreneur. They aren’t. YOU ARE!

Taking the plunge into being an entrepreneur can be absolutely amazing regardless of the obstacles if you remember these few pointer. Trust, there are a lot more but these will get you started:

  • BET ON YOURSELF.
  • Know your WHY.
  • Never get discouraged when things don’t work out as you thought they should.
  • Share your vision ONLY with those who support and encourage you
  • RESEARCH, RESEARCH, RESEARCH- Knowledge can never be taken from you.
  • Be honest about what you don’t know – Take time to learn as much as you can.
  • THERE IS ALWAYS A WAY, never give up.
  • Have patience
  • This is YOUR vision, do not let someone else make it theirs.

The most important tip in addition to these is ENJOY THE JOURNEY! You will only be in this moment once and it can never be duplicated so regardless of whether the path is phenomenal or rocky, enjoy every bit of it. We would love to hear your tips and how you stay motivated. Please leave a comment. You are now part of the Sisu Athletic community you are no longer allowed to be silent!

We Are Better Together

We get it, the day-to-day can be a struggle. We need to have a support system in place. When we build a healthy support system, we’re able to get through even the toughest of challenges. We help hold each other up and show our support through advice and even just lending an ear. If we didn’t have that, we might end up feeling lonely, depressed, and at times, just plan defeated.

Building a support system isn’t easy. Women sometimes struggle to support other women. It’s not really their fault. It’s just how we were brought up over the years. Society has made it seem like we have to be better or at least equals to run in the same circles, and that’s not true. We need each other, and we need to work hard to change these supposed norms.

Women need each other in this world more than ever. In a society where men still dominate the social, economic, political networks, we need to rise up and stick together to support each other. The impact of women building strong communities of other women is a growing phenomenon.

When you need support in your personal and professional life, having a strong connection to other women who have dealt with similar challenges, can share valuable advice on how they made it through, support you through your challenges, and celebrate when you succeed can make all the difference and, in many cases, can be the turning point between continuing and stopping what you were created to do.

It’s no secret that women face gender bias, workplace harassment, reproductive health issues, and just overall safety concerns. We are often targeted in-person and online when we speak up and defend ourselves. Those comment sections are an ugly place where men can easily hide behind their computer screens and “put us in our place.” Thankfully, women have begun to rise up and fight back with our zero-tolerance policy. Having a community of strong women that makes us feel safe speaking up and communicating when something is wrong is a powerful weapon we have only just begun to wield.

In business too? That’s clear that women are starting to bridge the inequality gap in professional businesses, but it has not been easy, and you can still see how far we have yet to go. The more women we can get to join communities, the more support, and encouragement we can show to help women grow professionally and personally, the stronger we are TOGETHER. Let’s climb those corporate and entrepreneur ladders and shatter that glass ceiling.

It takes courage, dedication, and mindfulness to make meaningful changes. Let’s start building a strong community of women who are there for each other, build each other up, and create a safe space as we navigate life. There’s no doubt that we work better when working together.

The Sisu Collective is passionate about building a community of women and helping to foster strong relationships and meaningful connections. If you know a woman that can benefit from a community of women living a life of purpose and intention, invite her to join our community – WE ARE A MOVEMENT.

Now Is Your Time!

You wake up in the middle of the night with your heart pounding and a wave of nausea rolling over you. Your eyes are open but you’re not sure whether you’re awake or still dreaming.

We’ve all experienced the nights when our thoughts seem to conspire against us, chasing away our sense of peace. This drama and this cycle all points to one root. Fear.

Humans fear what we do not know, what we cannot see clearly, and what we might become. Yet fear is a blessing in disguise, for it signals us that we have yet to explore all there is to know about ourselves.

When you begin to embrace your fear you become in tune with this signal and if you listen close enough to hear its call. A call heard in our souls, calling us home. The call tells us it is time to pack up our fears and walk in our purpose—the time has come to step into our power and let go of all that holds us back from this journey.

The process of dissolving our fear demands honesty. Be honest with yourself. No longer will you ignore the call, and pretend it is not there because you are afraid of your potential. Stand toe to toe with your fear and boldly say “I’m afraid”. Write it down, scream it out loud. And in the same breath make a vow that you will keep moving your legs despite any uncomfortable emotions that may show up to play.

You are committed to challenging yourself to overcome these fears. This commitment to bravery is carving a new pathway in the universe. The universe craves to bless you and uplift you, and is only waiting to hear you say, out loud, “Today, as I am, I am enough.”

Because you, right here, right now is enough. You were born with the talent you need to follow your dreams. You have just enough confidence to take on new leadership roles. You are enjoyable to be around and are attractive to your friends and neighbors. Because this is the truth.

You are here to live a vibrant and courageous life. Moving mountains and shaping nations, for generations and generations of impact.

As you embark on this journey, remember to pack your fears in those difficult moments when you’re tempted to “play it safe”. Pack your fears when you feel fear of judgment, or the urge to hold back.

This is your signal to get walking. Wear those shoes that make you feel tall and powerful. Wear that sexy outfit that reflects your inner beauty. Walk in your purpose and feel the bounce in your step and wind in your hair. Walk and show the world that this woman is going places.

If you are ready to take the next step in your confidence, we challenge you to proclaim in the comment section below who you are and where your journey will take you next. Whether it be starting a new business, going on a first date, or spending time learning a new Trade.

The Difference Between Who You Are and Who You Want To Be - Is What You Do

The Difference Between Who You Are and Who You Want To Be – Is What You Do

Are you someone who dreams of being your own boss? Have you worked for employers your entire adult life and felt boxed-in, undervalued, bored, underpaid, or even worse, like you are wasting your most valuable resource – time?

Starting a small business is not for everyone, and it is definitely not easy, but when your purpose, passion, and drive are all aligned, you can be unstoppable with the right team and resources.

There are a number of considerations to make before taking the leap from a steady (or not so steady) paycheck and the security or certainty that comes with employment in an established organization.

Ask yourself the following questions. Take some time with each of these and really think through your answers. Maybe you write them down to reflect on later.

·  What do I enjoy doing that I currently do not get to do in my role?

·  How much money do I have to invest into this new business venture, and am I willing to take out a business loan, line of credit, or seek out investors if the money is not sufficient to begin?

·  How will I attract customers to my business?

·  What is my why?

·  What about this business will motivate me to wake up every day and make sure it grows and becomes successful?

·  Am I a leader or do I need to partner with a leader so that I can do the work that I love and am good at?

·  Am I willing to fail?

·  Who can be my mentor and are they available and willing to fulfill that role for me?

·  What resources do I need to begin and run this business for the next 12 months, 3 years, 5 years?

There are many more pertinent questions you’ll want to consider before taking the leap into self-employment. Those listed above are a great place to start and will get your wheels turning.

Another important step is to speak with other entrepreneurs. Start with your friends and family. In your city, seek out groups of small business owners and attend their events and join their communities. You may discover that your perfect fit for a role is within someone else’s small business. Or, you will be reaffirmed that you want to follow the beat of your own drum and start your own small business. Either way, making real connections in your community with other business owners and networking in a methodical way will be key to your success as a new business owner.

It is important to understand the difference between building a small business and creating a side hustle. Side hustles are often how small businesses begin. And while a side hustle tends to grow at a slower pace than a full-fledged business, it is a good way for you to begin to understand if this new career path is right for you. Additionally, a side hustle allows you to maintain your current income source, so there is less risk involved if it does not work out the way you planned.

Remember, nothing in life that is worth it comes easy. Be sure to surround yourself with a strong and supportive community and when things get tough, they will always help you go back to your why. When you lead a business with the intent to serve others, great things can come from it.

Your Vision Has Purpose

“What is meant for me will find me, and what is not will pass me by.”

HAVE YOU EVER KNOWN SOMETHING TO BE TRUE FOR YOU, AND NOBODY AROUND YOU SEEMED TO GET IT?

You’ve tried discussing what is on your heart or mind with your partner, parent, coworker, neighbor, or friend, and their response is not what you expected or necessarily wanted to hear.

It can feel very lonely and isolating when the only person who believes in your vision is you. But, this can also be incredibly liberating. Because ultimately, the only person who needs to believe in your vision is you.

Each person is put on this earth to walk their respective path. You cannot intervene or change someone else’s journey and what is meant for you will simply find you. Think of it like a law of the universe. You may have heard the saying, “What’s meant for you will not pass you,” and it is a helpful phrase to remember when you feel like you’ve been cheated out of an opportunity or looked over for something you believe you deserved. It can help you find peace when you understand that something that passes you by was simply not meant for you.

Try this.

Repeat the following phrase, out loud, five times while standing tall and looking in a mirror:

What is meant for me will find me, and what is not will pass me by.

Take 30 seconds right now to try that out and see how it lands in your body.

How do you feel after that exercise? Do you believe the words as they come from your lips and land on your ears or do you feel like an imposter? Just notice how you feel. There is no good or bad way to feel. Do not judge yourself for anything that arises in your thoughts. Simply notice those thoughts.

Try repeating this exercise once a day for one week straight. Maybe you complete it in the morning when you wake up or at night before you go to sleep. Or maybe, when you’re feeling lost or out of control, it could serve as a reset for your brain as you feed your thoughts healthy reinforcements instead of leaning into what may be causing that anxiety, fear, pain, discomfort, or worry.

As you move through your days, remember that your vision for your life is valid and you deserve happiness. When you remain true to your authentic dreams and desires, that is when your environment begins to positively adapt for you. We get out exactly what we put in. When you put out worry about your future and get hung up on the idea that people around you don’t understand you or your dreams, it sends the wrong kind of energy out into the universe. Instead, when you trust that you, and you alone, know what is best for you, that is when life and opportunities start to unfold right in front of you.

Stay strong, stay focused, and do not allow other people’s opinions, judgments, and fears to stand in the way of your life and goals.

One of our favorite quotes is by Steve Maraboli. He says, “As I look back on my life, I realize that every time I thought I was being rejected from something good, I was actually being re-directed to something better.”

Another great way to think of this is the phrase “rejection is protection.” When something in your life, at first glance, seems to get derailed, it is important to look at it from a different lens or vantage point.

Remember, your intuition is one of your strongest powers, especially as a woman, and it is vital that you listen to your gut and act from that place. You never need someone else’s approval; you only need your own. Act with integrity and the rest will fall into place.

She Alpha Co.

Empowering women to develop their vision!

We are She Alpha Co., a company that believes every woman willing to succeed should be supported by other successful women because together, we can accomplish more! Our dedication is to empower, inspire, and educate women to obtain their goals and business vision by learning the skills necessary to thrive in their careers. We have built a network of women leaders combined with workshops & programs to elevate the women in our community to continue expanding, growing, and flourish in their expertise areas.

1.    How do you think being an entrepreneur has turned you into a better person?

Entrepreneurship has taught us so many lessons, but most of all, how to be resilient, patient, and persistent through times of adversity. We have both been through many journeys together and separately. Still, by becoming entrepreneurs, we have learned life skills that can only be learned through the experience of building a business. As individual beings, our perception has evolved and allowed us to connect with other women on different frequencies, which has allowed us to form new friendships, partnerships, and collaborations.

2.    How did you get your idea or concept for your business?

It wasn’t so much an idea, as it was more of what we didn’t want other women to experience. Through our childhood and adulthood, we worked hard! And I mean hard! We had several jobs at once, going to school, taking paid/unpaid internships, taking care of our families. We both started working incredibly young, 14 and 15 years of age (maybe even younger), providing for our families, and not one person ever landed a guiding hand. Everything we accomplished, we learned through the power of books, research, and trial & error. We honestly believe that it made us stronger, but it also made us realize that there should be a better way for women who had similar faiths to have a support system they can count on — a place where they can go for growth and development without feeling ashamed of asking for help.

3.    Can you recall a moment when you faced a roadblock in your progress but decided to push past it?

We have always had it together and always figure out a way forward. It is all that happens behinds the scenes that built us and prepared us for developing our company. Jenny experienced mental health challenges, divorce, and losing everything. Those character-building experiences pushed her over to chase the life she wanted and deserved. Many people fall behind the curveball and take those moments as setbacks that later define your life. She honestly said, “If I’m losing everything, what is stopping me from re-inventing my life the way I choose to live it?”. Fast-forward 3 years later, she is currently in Costa Rica working remotely and living a Nomadic life. Laura had a traumatic childhood which pushed her to become the best version of herself. Even from a young age, she knew she was destined for greatness and did not let her circumstances determine her outcome. She carries that with her nowadays for business and life in general.

4.    How would you like people to remember you and your company?

We strive to be the women who helped impact other women’s lives. The kind of women who would do what it takes for our future generations. For all the little girls who do not have the tools to succeed, and they have that burning fire to push through. As for our company, as we continue to evolve and expand, we look forward to being the kind of company women in our communities can trust and feel a sense of sisterhood.

5.    Is there anything you would like to share that we haven’t asked?

Our doors are always open, and we are looking for women to join our movement and mission. We empower you to reach out for questions, consultations, join one of our programs, and even for coffee dates with other extraordinary women. You do not have to do this alone!

2023 Is Your Year of Intention and Growth

Before you begin reading, we challenge you to take 60 seconds to consider the following question:

HOW AM I LIVING WITH INTENTION AND WALKING IN MY PURPOSE TODAY?

Try it. Jot some notes down if you’d like. Give yourself at least one full minute to mull this question over in your brain.

Okay. Now, let’s begin.

For some of you, nothing came to mind. You spent 60 seconds racking your brain and nothing really landed. That’s okay. You’re not alone.

For others, you were able to have a full conversation with yourself about the ways you are aligned in your life and meeting your personal standards of intention and purpose. Great.

And then there’s the rest of us. Somewhere in between.

If you’re anything like us, just getting started is often the hardest part. Let’s start with the foundation. We cannot build on an unsteady foundation, so look for ways to strip your life down to its most very basic purpose and reason for being.

Why are you here? On this planet, at this exact time. Is it just random or is there a reason for you to be here, now? If there is a reason, what is it?

For our team, some of our reasons include love, motherhood, partnership, creation, awareness, and growth. Your reason can be anything you’d like, but it must resonate with you. It is what gets you out of bed every day. It’s what makes you smile when you think about it and maybe it also sometimes keeps you up at night. It’s like a steady buzz always powering your day, whether you consciously notice it, or not.

Purpose is a strong word. It can be scary if you feel like you haven’t found yours or you don’t have one. Trust us, every person on this planet has a purpose. You would not be here if that wasn’t so. Take comfort in knowing that your gifts, even if still undiscovered, are meant to be shared with others. That is what makes a gift a gift, after all. It must be shared to expand its value. You cannot keep it to yourself.

To find your purpose, start with knowing your truth. What is true about you? Try writing down a list of 5-10 things that you know to be true about yourself. Study it. What themes do you see? Your one job while you’re on this planet is to simply become more of who you are already. Authenticity is the highest form of self-respect and respect for those around you. Be true to yourself and your needs and desires and you’ll begin to see your life align piece by piece over time. Stay diligent and be patient with yourself. Only you know what is best for you. Nobody else can know that for you, and you cannot know that for somebody else. When you simultaneously allow others to live in their true spirit, and you practice the same, beauty starts to unfold. It really is that simple if you allow it to be.

We’d love to hear from you.

In what ways are you living with intention?

Where is there room for personal improvement?

What have you found helpful or harmful along the way?

Our community has a lot to learn from each other as we move into a new year with fresh intentions and renewed purpose for 2023 and beyond. Please let us know of any ways we can support and further empower you. That’s what SISU is all about.
